“An artist all my life, I have found inspiration in the natural world and always painted out of doors with my easel in all weathers! Sketching too is invaluable and I keep large watercolour journals which are reference when working in my studio.
To paint and sketch en plein air means that I am processing and selecting what I see and all the elements, the air, the birds calling, the light, sounds of wind and sea, they become part of the painting process.”
North Devon Arts artists are leading Saturday morning En Plein Air sketching sessions along the River Taw at Barnstaple, following in the footsteps of Turner, one of the nation’s favourite painters.
With his grandparents reputedly born in South Molton, Turner made various trips to North Devon, famously painting the River Taw at Barnstaple, where many of these riverscape scenes can still be recognised today! Stand where Turner did and sketch what he saw!
You can bring your own preferred materials and equipment, which could include: watercolours, small plastic water container, pen and inks, pencils, charcoal, sketchbook/paper, portable easel, etc. Or limited materials will be available if required.
Suitable from beginners to expert level. Children over 14, but must be accompanied by an adult. Max: 15 people per session.
Wear suitable clothing for getting messy and for the riverside as it can get chilly.
10am – 12.30pm (meet in Museum Reception 10am)
